The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens is a multidisciplinary, collections-based research and education institution founded by Henry E. and Arabella Huntington in 1919. The Huntington is unique in the world, arguably the only actively collecting institution with three superlative collections comprising a world-renowned library, fine art, and rare and endangered botanical species each made available for education, research, and visitor enjoyment and engagement. Encompassing 207 acres in San Marino, California, just 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles, The Huntington includes 10 gallery spaces for changing exhibitions; a library holding some 12 million objects from the 11th to 21st centuries; 130-acres of botanical gardens with more than 15,000 rare plants landscaped into more than a dozen specialized gardens; and distinguished collections of American, Asian, and European art together comprising over 45,000 objects. The Huntington has 54,000 member families and hosts more than 1 million visitors each year, including 50,000 who enjoy complimentary admission during a monthly Free Day, and 20,000 students who participate in their education programs free of charge.

Led by President Karen R. Lawrence, The Huntington has more than 550 full-time and part-time staff who are assisted by more than 1,200 volunteers. The Huntington is a nonprofit institution supported by gifts and grants from individuals and corporations, foundations, and government agencies, and by private endowment. The Vice President of Communications and Marketing will lead the development and implementation of strategic integrated communications and marketing across all public-facing institutional initiatives, programs, and activities to increase The Huntington’s profile on a regional, national, and global scale and to position its relevance to multiple audiences.

The Vice President of Communications and Marketing will bring deep expertise in communications, marketing, digital outreach, and brand identity management with the ability to drive a cohesive message across multiple platforms and engage a multicultural audience.

Reporting into the President, the Vice President of Communications and Marketing is an organizational strategist and a member of the organization’s senior leadership team. They will be a trusted advisor to the President, an expert in crisis communications, and will serve as the Huntington representative and spokesperson to members of the press.

The Vice President of Communications and Marketing will lead five direct reports (Assistant Vice President, Communications and Marketing; Managing Editor; Director of Social Content and Strategy; Director of Online Development and Strategy; and Executive and Media Assistant) across four departments (Publicity and Media Relations, Marketing and Graphic Design; Social Media; Web Content; and Publications and Editorial) and a total team of 21.

Specific responsibilities include:

Communications & Marketing Strategy
• Develops and executes a comprehensive Huntington-wide communications, marketing, and branding strategy consistent with the strategic priorities of the institution.
• Develops and executes key messages for specific audiences and coaches the staff in telling compelling stories across platforms for a consistent, unified message in support of The Huntington’s strategic goals and brand.
• Develops and executes marketing campaigns for revenue-generating activities through collaborations with staff across the institution, including the Huntington Store, Special Events, Membership, food services, and other special programs.

Branding & Promotion
• Leads the implementation and management of a newly conceived branding strategy for the institution.
• Oversees the design, writing/editing, art, development, implementation and production of highly effective promotional tools and strategies, including print and electronic publications.
• Leads a growing social media team to leverage platforms and analytics to create dynamic experiences to increase follower numbers, audience engagement, and impact across diverse audiences.

Media Relations & Community Outreach
• Serves as the chief spokesperson for the institution, interacting comfortably and readily with members of the press and diverse communities.
• Works to increase the visibility and brand identity of The Huntington by actively cultivating relationships with press at the national level.
• Responds to news inquiries; organizes press conferences and opening events.
• Counsels the president and senior leaders in communications strategy and crisis communications.
• Creates and leverages key partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to support communications and marketing plans.

Operational Leadership
• Leads, manages and mentors five direct reports and a team of 20 across four departments within the Office of Communications and Marketing.
• Develops and manages the annual budget for Communications and Marketing along with long-range planning, execution, and analysis.
• Oversees the creation and execution of standardized marketing and communication processes.
• Leads evidence-based evaluations of communications and marketing campaigns and implements process changes as necessary.



• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field
• 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in communications, marketing, and/or public relations or related area with an emphasis on digital communications and marketing.
• Exceptional written and verbal communications skills in English; Bilingual ability in Spanish preferred.
• 10+ years of experience in managing a staff of five or more.
• Experience in non-profit management and the Los Angeles-area cultural landscape preferred.
• Exceptional media relations skills with proven track record in working with national-level press and having established relationships with members of the press.
• Demonstrated ability to lead crisis communications and serve as chief spokesperson.
• Excellent track record in communicating with and providing counsel to senior levels of management, including board members and donors.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, Google; and Adobe; familiarity with Google Analytics; familiarity with communications and marketing analytic databases and CRM tools a plus
