This position is a state government position at the North Carolina Museum of Art (a division of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources) in Raleigh, NC.

The Media and Communications Manager is responsible for publicizing and interpreting the mission of the Museum to local, regional, and national news media, to the public via special communications projects, and internally to staff.  The position is the main point of contact for the media.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Creating and distributing press materials, securing media coverage, and hosting media events and visits.
  • Creating media materials (press releases, image sheets, fact sheets, story ideas, etc.) and comprehensive PR plans, with timelines, targeting long- and short-lead publications, bloggers, social influencers, online outlets, TV, and radio outlets.
  • Proactively developing and pitching story ideas to media. Determining which stories are appropriate for which outlets. Maintaining relationships and familiarity with journalists and the topics they cover to successfully place Museum stories.
  • Managing Museum social media accounts, including existing platforms Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest (as well as emerging platforms for strategic consideration) and scheduling platforms such as HootSuite, Later, and LinkInBio. This role oversees editorial calendar planning, daily postings, and engaging with audience via comments and direct messages in a timely manner.
  • Creating and executing new promotional campaigns utilizing social media to support overall marketing goals and adhering to project timelines and plans once finalized.
  • Developing creative content alongside graphics team for distribution across social media channels.
  • Reporting on channel growth, analytics, and impact on campaign goals, including revenue, attendance, and web traffic.
  • Understanding and articulating needs of the Museum relative to the digital space and staying abreast of new media trends and capabilities.
  • Working with marketing, content, video production, web, blog, editing, and design teams to tell the museum’s stories visually and creatively via the web.
  • Forging and managing community partnerships to plan and execute promotional campaigns, projects, and events to support marketing goals and gain media coverage.
  • Making sure the museum and its brand, events, and exhibitions are represented in wider community conversations, festivals, and public events.
  • Connecting with key community stakeholders to further relationships in local and statewide arts, design, and urban planning communities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

  • Demonstrated experience developing, pitching, and placing story ideas to local, national, and global media, as well as blogger and social media influencer engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience managing social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Tik Tok, Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram) and social media planning, scheduling, and analytics tools (Later.com, Tweetdeck).
  • Demonstrated experience developing community engagement and viral marketing campaigns that will draw press and influencer coverage.

Management Preferences:

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal tactfully with a variety of stakeholders including the public.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, English, or related area of assignment from an appropriately accredited institution and 5 years of experience in a public relations, communications, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
